Who We Are: The Art of Identity

May 2 - June 24, 2022

Who We Are: The Art of Identity explores the intimate and indissoluble link between art and artist – what we make is influenced by and intertwined with who we are.  The artists featured in this exhibit represent many different backgrounds, lived experiences, and personal signifiers, spanning race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and body image.  Inherent in our work are the profound ways in which our identities impact how the world perceives us, and, in turn, how we perceive ourselves, especially when said identities are systemically targeted.

As artists, we often use art to explore the various facets of our identities, be it to find healing or foster a sense of connection with others who share our struggles.  Who We Are offers the viewer an opportunity to take part in a highly personal dialogue about individuality and selfhood.  Each artist’s work serves as a page from their visual diary.  Beyond simply admiring the work before you, this show encourages you to engage with the artist on a deeper, more personal level, by connecting the numerous threads that tie their work together, inform their perspective, and define their artistic expression.
