2nd Annual Themed Photography Show

Call for entries:
MONDAY, DEC. 9 – FRIDAY, DEC. 27

 

In 2020, we will go to the ballot box again and vote for what matters to us most, things like Environment, Social, Infrastructure or Education. In celebration of this occasion, photographers of Iowa are invited to submit their pictures that represent those matters up close and personal. You are invited to submit up to four photos with suggested categories including, but are not limited to: 

  • Environment (for example, climate change, deforestation, pollution, natural disasters, etc.) 

  • Social (for example, immigration, human rights, military, equal pay, incarceration, etc.) 

  • Infrastructure (for example, transportation, public institutions, etc.) 

  • Education (for example, school, higher education, student debt, etc.) 

 

AWARDS

The juror will award seven photographers

  • One Best of Show - $250

  • Three Merit Awards - $125 each

  • Three Honorable Mention Awards - $75 each


FEES & RULES

$30 flat fee. Photographers are invited to submit up to 4 photos. 

  1. Theme to respect: It’s a show about issues, NOT political.  We want to see how you represent the issues that matter the most to you through your art. For this exhibit, we are not accepting photos that showcase or promote political parties, rallies, candidates, or platforms. 

  2. Eligibility: Iowa Residency. Photographers with an Iowa address are invited to submit. 

  3. Age: All artists must be 15 years of age or older.

  4. Photo manipulation: Retouching, coloring, filtering, etc are allowed. Collages, the combination of two images, water stamps. Text is NOT permitted. 

  5. Preparation: All work must be ready for display and wired for hanging.

  6. Delivery: Unless otherwise arranged, all accepted work must be delivered during the posted delivery time. Late delivery may result in the exclusion of the accepted piece from the exhibit.


TIMELINE + IMPORTANT DATES

  • CALL FOR ENTRIES: Monday, December 9, 2019

  • ENTRY DEADLINE: Friday, December 27, 2019

  • JUDGING: December 30 – 31, 2019 - The juror will review the submissions and choose approximately 60 - 70 pieces for the exhibit.

  • ANNOUNCEMENT OF SELECTED PHOTOGRAPHERS: January 4, 2020

  • PHOTO DROP OFF: January 16 and 17, 2020 from 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Two days only!

  • EXHIBITION DATES: January 21 – March 13, 2020

  • PUBLIC + ARTISTS RECEPTION + AWARDS: TBD.

  • PHOTO PICK-UP: March 16 and 17, 2020 from 11:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Two days only!


About David Purdy

Photography Chair and Instructor DMACC Ankeny Campus

David Purdy has 30 years of industry experience in news, corporate and studio photography. He's worked at The Des Moines Register, Meredith Corporation and as a freelance photographer. His work has been featured in Newsweek, Esquire, USA Today and Sports Illustrated.

In 2005, Purdy and The Sun Herald (Biloxi, MS) staff received the Gold Medal Pulitzer Prize for valorous and comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Katrina. Purdy's work from Hurricane Katrina was published in two books: Katrina 8 Hours That Changed the Mississippi Gulf Coast Forever and Katrina Before & After.

Purdy has also received several photography awards from the Mississippi Press Association.
